Ulf Wakenius / Pierre Boussaguet / Alex Riel
In Honour Of NHØP
A very special trio featuring Swedish super guitarist Ulf Wakenius, French bass genius Pierre Boussaguet and Danish drummer par excellence Alex Riel.
The three friends will dedicate the first half of their concert to a mutual friend, inspiration and colleague: bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Both Wakenius and Riel were members of NHØP’s own trios and so they have very close personal and musical relations to this legendary great Dane whose exceptional talent made an invaluable impact on international bass playing and jazz in general.
Bassist Pierre Boussaguet is a perfect example of an artist who’s been influenced and inspired deeply by NHØP and so his playing is characterized by a rich tone, rhythmical lines and a strong authority that in many ways could resemble NHØP’s. Yet Boussaguet is a master of his own rights and through his collaborations with some of the greatest international names in jazz and beyond he’s long been acknowledged as one of the best bassists coming out of Europe. The fact that he’s been part of a bass duo with no other than Ray Brown should be proof of his talent and authority on the double bass.
Like Pierre Boussaguet – and Alex Riel – guitarist Ulf Wakenius has worked with a vast number of international stars and is being recognized as one himself! Not least is he known for his work with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in the NHØP Trio and also as a fellow long time member of the legendary Oscar Peterson Trio.
Alex Riel and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen were in the sixties part of the house rhythm section at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen playing with visiting jazz greats. This soon made the two young talents known abroad as ”The Great Danes” and laid the foundation for their international careers. They continued working together in various groups until NHØP’s untimely death in 2005.
Whereas the concert’s first half primarily will include tunes from NHØP’s repertoire, the second half will focus on presenting the three band members playing selected tunes which they each relate to in a special way. This includes standards as well as original compositions by Wakenius and Boussaguet.
